Fields of Stongde, Zanskar, August 2006

The view from the hill of the Stongde(y) Gompa towards the main plains of Zanskar, where the Zanskar and Tsarap Rivers join — with clouds over the main Himalayan Range far behind. A photo taken during the rainy summer trek through Zanskar in August 2006. The unusually green fields belong to the Stongde(y) village below the friendly Gelukpa monastery, founded by Naropa’s follower Lama Marpa Lotsawa in 1052. See the photo gallery concerning this trek.
