El Risco de Famara by Guimar, the only really seemingly wild part of the steep northwest coast of the Lanzarote Island. Reached by the prosaic backyards of the Guimara village, along a valley with archaic field terraces, this part of the precipitous volcanic ridge is one of these surprisingly unspoiled parts of the island. Rewarded with spectacular views towards the island of La Graciosa and its smaller neighbours, this is one of these places where you might imagine how it all looked like before the spanish conquista of the Canary Islands archipelago began. Elsewhere on the island, although you are almost constantly reminded by the grim landscape of the power of the volcanoes, the presence of the modern civilisation and tourist traffic is overwhelming.
